Madison Square Park Conservancy is responsible for the maintenance of the park’s lawns which are in the process of spring reseeding. While the grass is establishing now, visitors should expect the majority of lawns to be ready for use in late May.  Lawns are open daily for public use starting at 10 AM through 5 PM, weather permitting. Lawns are closed on Parade Days.  Learn more about park hours and rules by visiting our FAQ page.

Silver linden

Tilia tomentosa 'PNI 6051'

Tilia tomentosa ‘PNI 6051’ (Green Mountain®) is a fast-growing, cultivated variety of silver linden prized for its dense, round shape, and for being heat- & drought-tolerant. These traits make it a popular street tree. While the upper surface of its leaves are a glossy, dark green, ”tomentosa” refers to the soft, fuzzy covering found on their silvery underside. They possess a heart shape, but with a longer point, an asymmetrical base, and a toothed margin.

Clusters of fragrant, cream-colored flowers can be found June through July, attracting a variety of pollinators, after which its leaves turn a yellow color in autumn, and eventually drop for the year. This tree reaches heights between 50 and 70 feet, with the texture of its bark changing from smooth to ridged as it matures.
