Whiteout by Erwin Redl is comprised of 900 transparent spheres, each embedded with a discrete, white LED light and suspended from a square grid of steel poles and cabling. The orbs are opportunistic, gently swaying with the wind currents from their positions one foot above the ground plane. The spheres are animated through both computer-generated movement and natural flow from air currents. The sequence of light is an incandescent treatment of public space across the dark seasons of the late fall and winter when the Oval Lawn is closed. Redl discerns this opportunity for his work, and chooses to site Whiteout on the football-field-size expanse. 

Whiteout can be viewed from the pathways and arteries of the Park and from the higher floors of surrounding buildings. The experiences are visually different. From the ground plane, visitors feel how their body moves in space to perceive or view light, how people are physically drawn to light, how the work is a beacon across space. From the aerial view, the movement of the public is in dialogue with the orbs. Both vantage points bring a unique perspective to the project.
