Madison Square Park Conservancy is responsible for the maintenance of the park’s lawns which are in the process of spring reseeding. While the grass is establishing now, visitors should expect the majority of lawns to be ready for use in late May.  Lawns are open daily for public use starting at 10 AM through 5 PM, weather permitting. Lawns are closed on Parade Days.  Learn more about park hours and rules by visiting our FAQ page.

The State of our Trees 2023

Email Headers 2023 2024 (23)

Each year, our team completes a thorough tree inspection and assessment to determine the health of our trees. This allows us to identify which trees need extra care and which require pruning––a process needed to help us plan for the future. Use the button below to download the complete report.

Changes the trees in 2023:

Trees removed: 2

  • Tree of Heaven (Ailanthus altissima) due to structural defects and invasive nature
  • Black Locust (Robinia pseudoacacia) due to structural defects

Trees planted: 6

  • Sassafras tree (Sassafras albidum)
  • Northern Catalpa (Catalpa speciosa)
  • Fire King Musclewood (Carpinus caroliniana ‘Fire King’)
  • Kindred Spirit Hybrid Oak (Quercus ‘Nadler’)
  • Prairie Sentinel Hackberry (Celtis occidentalis ‘Prairie Sentinel’)
  • Espresso Kentucky Coffeetree (Gymnocladus dioicus ‘Espresso’)

The Conservancy has not only developed a tree succession plan to help us plan for the future, but we also want to ensure that we continue to provide our community with access to a world-class arboretum. To learn more about our tree plan, click here. And to donate to the tree fund, click here.
