Madison Square Park Conservancy is responsible for the maintenance of the park’s lawns which are in the process of spring reseeding. While the grass is establishing now, visitors should expect the majority of lawns to be ready for use in late May.  Lawns are open daily for public use starting at 10 AM through 5 PM, weather permitting. Lawns are closed on Parade Days.  Learn more about park hours and rules by visiting our FAQ page.

The Growth of Composting at Madison Square Park

Composting can be a very rewarding way of making a positive impact on the environment, because the results are easy to track. Every pound of food scraps collected by GrowNYC in the park each Wednesday is a pound of waste that doesn’t need to be transported and deposited into a landfill. And every pound of compost created from those food scraps represents a pound of vital nutrients that supports the health and resilience of the city’s greenspaces.

Thanks to GrowNYC and all of the community members who drop off food scraps each week, the first year of our Food Scrap Drop-off was very successful. On average, 374 pounds of waste has been collected during each composting event. And in total, we’ve collected over 15,000 pounds of food waste this year—the equivalent of over three pickup trucks in terms of sheer weight.

As the year draws to a close, we hope that parkgoers will continue to help us put a dent in the amount of food scraps that end up in our waste stream by bringing them to the park every Wednesday. Though the amount we collect can be weighed, its overall impact on the health of our environment is immeasurable.
