City of Forest Day
City of Forest Day
This October 15, we’re celebrating the inaugural City of Forest Day in NYC to bring awareness to the urban forest and how each New Yorker can play a part in caring for and advocating on behalf of our trees. This event was created through a collaboration between the Forest For All NYC coalition, Parks and Open Spaces NYC partners, and the New York City Department of Parks and Recreation.
Our urban forest provides so much to our bustling city! From reducing temperatures to creating habitat for the wildlife that call the city home—our tree canopy is crucial. And with over 7 million trees, there is so much work that needs to be done to keep our urban forest growing. Trees line our streets, fill our parks and shade our backyards, creating plenty of opportunities for us to interact with our urban forest. To learn how you can be a tree steward and support the Forest For All NYC coalition towards their goal of 30% canopy cover by 2035, visit their website.
Here at Madison Square Park, we’ll be celebrating by the Reflecting Pool from 11 AM – 2 PM with an afternoon of activities. You’ll be able to learn more about our Tree Conservation Plan, enjoy some coloring pages, and take part in a self-guided tree tour. We’ll also be offering guided tours of the park’s Level II arboretum at noon—but registration is limited, so be sure to RSVP.
City of Forest Day is a citywide event, so keep tabs on activities happening across the city at the Forest For All NYC website. Events include weeding, planting, walking tours, and clean-ups! There is sure to be something for everyone, but no matter where you celebrate, be sure to share your experience by using the hashtag #CityofForestDay2022 on social media!
