Description
Madison Square Park, a seven-acre urban site, is located in Manhattan’s Flatiron District at East 23rd Street between Madison and Fifth Avenues. Madison Square Park Conservancy raises the funds that support a program of commissioned contemporary public art, lush horticulture, Park maintenance, Park security, and free public programs. The Park has remained open during the pandemic providing an urban oasis for neighbors, families, communities, and workers.
Madison Square Park Conservancy’s Horticulture Program features 7 acres of dynamic public green space. Madison Square Park is Manhattan’s only accredited arboretum and home to several centennial trees. The stunning perennial gardens feature 5 signature plant collections, ecological gardens, and ornamental flowers. MSPC’s signature Horticulture Program features two themed seasonal exhibitions a year providing surprise and delight to visitors.
Duties and Responsibilities
The Horticulture Volunteer will work with the Horticulture Manager to maintain plantings at Madison Square Park.
- Install and maintain seasonal beds, perennial additions, and planters
- Provide supplemental watering to plantings as needed
- Fertilize, mulch, and add supplements as outlined in best practices
- Remove litter and natural debris that builds up in beds, lawns, and containers
- Conduct woody and herbaceous pruning not limited to deadheading, cutbacks, and structural
- Weeding, Raking and Edging
Minimum Requirements
- Basic Gardening experience is preferred.
- Volunteers must commit to one day of service between Monday and Friday within a seasonal period.
- Times available for Monday : 9 AM – 12 PM
- Times available for Wednesday: 11 AM – 1 PM
- Volunteers can reapply for continuing seasonal service.
- MSPC is now recruiting for summer commitment.
- This opportunity does require lifting, bending and some tasks that may be considered physically strenuous.
