What is iNaturalist?
iNaturalist is a free nature app used to identify the plants and animals around you. Scientists from around the world use the iNaturalist database to better understand the natural environment to protect ecosystems. By recording and sharing observations, this community-driven platform lets you learn more about the nature that surrounds you.
At the park, our team uses the data collected to make important decisions about the habitats and food sources that sustain Madison Square Park’s ecosystem. While you’re in the park, take time to look high in the treetops for our resident birds, or under fallen leaves for snails and slugs, and notice how the habitats and food sources that sustain the species that call our park home are all connected.
Find out more about each species living in the park by visiting our iNaturalist profile page and learn how using iNaturalist helps protect Madison Square Park. With your help, we can keep the park healthy and green for generations to come.
iNaturalist is a joint initiative by the California Academy of Sciences and the National Geographic Society. Download the app here.
