Serviceberry

Amelanchier x grandiflora 'Autumn Brilliance'
Autumn Brilliance Serviceberry

The ‘Autumn Brilliance’ serviceberry is a hybrid between the Downy serviceberry and the Allegheny serviceberry. It grows multiple trunks, and typically reaches 15–20 feet tall. While it’s named for its fall color, the Autumn Brilliance is just as majestic in the spring, displaying a spray of large white blossoms.

Its flowers bloom in April, creating a beautiful sight that feeds both birds and bees. As its berries ripen to a deep purple in June, they are quickly eaten by mockingbirds, bluebirds, and finches. These sweet tasting fruits are often used in jams and pies and reportedly have a plum-like flavor. Its small bronze spring leaves mature to dark-green through the summer, and in fall, turn a radiant orangish red, that lights up the park’s landscape before winter.
